Exchanging contracts and completion?

How long before completion are exchange of contracts done? also wanted to ask if anyone knows, how they exchange contracts? just done a search on google and it said contracts are exchanged over the phone? is this right?

We are hoping to complete next Friday, but we haven't exchanged contracts yet, could this still happen? or would contracts need to be exchanged earlier than this?

yes, is all done via phone, electronically now. we exchanged on a thurs, moved following monday.

It's even possible (but not recommended) to exchange and complete on the same day.

when i moved house last year i exchanged contracts on the Tuesday and moved house Friday of the same week.
(the friday of the previouse week (ie 4days before the TusdayIdidnt think id be moving for another 3 weeks though!)

Dont know how they are exchanged as solicitor dealt with it all.
