Me again! Like the house not so desirable area

We just viewed this house:

Pros:
Lots of space, it's quirkiness of all bedrooms being accessed by their own staircases play in our favour. Decent condition and kitchen.

Cons :
No garden (although we barely use it). Decoration needs to be completely redone. TV and speakers are built into the wall so that needs to be replastered. Damp everywhere (although apparently that's normal in Cornwall). Location is not very desirable (although I don't mind it).

We're thinking of offering £190k to at at £195k.

You say ‘apparently’ Damp is normal in Cornwall. I can second and third that! But it sounds as though you’re unfamiliar with that bit of Cornwall?
I know Redruth and Camborne a bit and they’re both just very mixed. Lovely bits then cheek by jowl less lovely. Keep eye on fields which may turn out to be campsites, village halls which can be noisy, areas where travellers settle unexpectedly if that worries you, land where statics (I can see a few in front gardens on street view) appear etc. None of those may be any problem or worry.

Yes, I'm more familiar with Falmouth/Truro. DC would stay at their schools so no issue there. The field behind the house is a farm and there are a few lovely houses around it. I wouldn't say the area is awful, I think it's more by reputation than anything else.

Didn’t have time to work out inside (I’m always more interested in area). But stairs to each bedroom sounds really unusual and will either work brilliantly for you or be a pita !

It really works for us! DS would have his section, so will the girls and we'd have our own "wing" for us and the baby

Just not for me! Three staircases? Do you all lead separate lives? It’s too quirky with not much garden. I would want a better layout. We have a house in Cornwall and it’s not damp.

We don't live separate lives but the two eldest ones definitely start to look for their own space/time.

Lack of garden is a minor issue, doing any gardening is always a chore. I'm sure that will never change

7to25 it actually is. How could you tell?

Access to the bathroom is inconvenient, especially for the first bedroom (the one above the lounge)

I would be completely put off by sharing outside space/outbuildings with a farmer who «rarely « uses it - that situation could change

Area is always the priority for me. I wouldn't move somewhere with a dodgy reputation, it could make your life a misery.

The garden is overlooked and I would be very nervous about the shared outside space.

The front door is at an angle and the positioning is typical of a shop. Also the windows would have been altered. I think the render is to cover thar.

Yes, location is not ideal. But a big enough 4 bed in an ideal location is probably around 300-320k. There are some for £250k but they're small and with almost no possibility to extend.

The outdoor space is tiny for a house that size somewhere so rural. It might be fine for you, but what about selling on?

That seems very cheap for a 4-bed, I’d be asking why? There’s always a catch.. what’s the building made off. I liked a house in Cornwall but you couldn’t get a mortgage as it was sub-standard construction, not far from that area your looking at. We ended up buying in Devon in the end.

@XXcstatic that is my main worry. We're not buying to make a profit, just to not pay more rent, so as long as we get our money back, I think I'd be happy with it. I would call it semi-rural, more Redruth than not.

@TriSkiRun99 I think for the area, it's within price. Same area similar number of rooms but with an actual garden goes for £230-£250k.

Do ask! It sounds like a splendid idea.

I don't know the area, have fond memories of visiting Redruth as a child but no idea what it's like now.

The house is really lovely but does need at least one more bathroom or shower room. Or even a toilet and wash basin ensuite if a room is not big enough to accommodate a shower, at least the occupant wouldn't have to queue for the loo and a girl could take her make up off, clean teeth etc before showering or late at night.

There's a communal parking area which is a plus. There's no garden but is there just a little bit of outside space? My son had a flat for a while which had a tiny outside area at the back, He put his bike there (used to cycle), a couple of chairs and a barbecue. Unfortunately he set fire to the fence, it was soon put out but - no more barbecues! However, with your own place you could have a brick wall (& a tinier barbecue).

Really not my cup of tea - sorry! The quirky layout will become old quickly I expect, and the lack of bathroom upstairs would be an issue with that many staircases. I would also be concerned in terms of routes out in case of fire. You say the layout works for you, but I expect it won’t work for the vast majority of people and so will be a pain to sell on. Not sure how Illogan is doing these days, but yeah, a bit rough perhaps. Damp is common in Cornwall but I’m not sure I could live in a damp property. Could handle it in a holiday let but not my home...

@Rachelover40 I'm actually very excited about it! We could have trees and fairy lights ideal for just hanging out, bit still have some privacy.

@Longqueue I worry about that too. We don't plan to stay in Cornwall forever, as such we'll probably sell in 8-9 years. The main reason to buy is to pay less for accommodation, given that's the case as long as we don't make a loss, I think it's still worth it.

I can't wait for you to exchange contracts! It is such a lovely, quirky house.

So if you're in the front bedroom and need a pee, youve got to go downstairs and through living room, dining room and kitchen ? Id have wet myself by then !
