Door £8,000 quote?!?!?!

Has anyone had a front door fitted recently?
May I ask how much it cost you and could you recommend a company?
We’ve been quoted £8,000 for a composite standard door with side panel, with frosted glass on the top half. I know composite doors are more expensive, but this seems excessive.
Could you share your experiences, even if it’s UPVC door?
Thank you!!

Is the quote from Urban Front? They are ridiculously expensive. We got a similar looking door from Solidor for under £2k.

notso · 10/04/2019 09:26

Ours with glass above was around £800.

Thanks everyone!
It was by Anglian, we live near Newbury, south-east. DH and I were shocked tbh.
Any local firms anyone can recommend? The only thing extra we did ask for was a door knocker...!!! Definitely no gold-plated hinges!!!! Grin

Durability, insulation, noise reduction, colour lasts longer etc

We had our doors done by Regal HomeMakers. They’re based near Swindon so I think Newbury would be fine for them. They came out to me and I’m just outside of Oxford.

That is crazy money.

I had a bespoke hardwood front door made by a local joinery company, an exact and faithful reproduction of our original period door. It includes a panel of handmade stained glass and the door itself is considerably larger than a standard ‘off the peg’ door. It cost £4700 including frame, fitting, painting & VAT. I paid separately for locks & door furniture which the door guys fitted as part of the £4700.

I’m not a fan of composite doors in general (I think the proportions are ‘off’ in their designs) but they have excellent reputations for security, heat retention and longevity/durability, as well as having more colour choices and style options than UPVC doors. I think Solidor have an excellent reputation in terms of quality but they are at the upper end of the price scale.

Hi, SosigDog!
Can I ask how you went about doing things? Did you buy from Solidoor and then arrange a fitting with a local tradesman? Were they recommended by Solidoor? Thanks!

Thanks, MaisyMary, I’ll give them a try! Did you like their product and customer service? Cheers!

We had our door (Solidor) fitted a few weeks ago and it's great. c.£1,900 including really pretty glass panels, a frosted pane at the top, door knob and knocker. Less pretty glass would have decreased the price.

I used the 'design your door' feature on the Solidor website to decide what we wanted, and Solidor then put us in contact with a local independent company that does fitting for Solidor.

We have a solidor... you can design the type you like online then request a valuation from a local supplier and fitter. Love ours. Was £1300 with glass panel

Floralnomad · 10/04/2019 18:27

We are just waiting to have a Solidor Tenby door fitted , chrome finishes and the top of the range locking system and it’s going to be 1200 including fitting . We use a local independent window company .

BookishKitten · 10/04/2019 21:08

Thanks everyone!! Flowers
I’m sold on Solidor, will give them a call!
Avoid Zenith and Anglian in the future...!

We have a Rockdoor. £1300 fitted. It's fab and feels so secure. Lots of design choices and colours. Recommend.

BookishKitten I found them to be really good. Very quick to come over and quote and didn’t insist that DH was to be there for the sales pitch... Both my front door and back doors are great quality with top notch locking systems etc. The fitters were efficient. I was so impressed I had them back to do my kitchen windows a year later.
