Bathroom renovation. Tell me.

We're in the process of getting quotes to have our only bathroom renovated. The suit needs ripping out, it needs retailing, and reflooring.

We only have 1 bathroom so it needs a pretty swift turnaround.

Has anyone had this done in a short space of time? Could you still use the toilet?

Good and bad stories please.

You need to ask whoever does the work for you to leave you with a working toilet at the end of every working day and either the sink or bath plumbed and usable. You might have to have strip washes at the kitchen sink for a couple of days though, but leaving you with a functioning toilet shouldn't be too difficult.

It’ll probably take a week, depending on exactly what you’re having done. As long as you have the new toilet there, the bathroom fitter will be able to leave you with a functioning toilet.

Family, friends, or the showers at the local pool etc as and when necessary. It’s no fun,
but you’ll get by & then have a lovely new bathroom!

Shower isn't actually too much of an issue because we have decent showers at work!

I'm just hearing horror stories of people who were told it would take 8 days and it ended up taking 7 weeks.

At least 2 weeks. Bathrooms usually need a mix of trades - builder, plasterer, plumber, tiler, electrician. You should be left with a usable toilet, maybe flush with a bucket for 1/2 nights.

I’d say 2 weeks - it’s difficukt to get all the trades to line up and tiling can take a while depending what you’re having down. Also if you’re having walls skimmed that needs to dry.

If you need a working toilet you can be left with one, adds faff onto the project but is possible. If it’s just adults out at work you can get away with a ‘poo at work’ policy and emergency wee in a travel John or a bucket down an outside drain/on the garden if you have to.

Ours has been 3 weeks so far, but we were only without bath/shower for 2 days and our plumber would have put the toilet in every night if required.

Be glad when it's finished sick of the dust

@nrpmum 3 weeks! Is it a large bathroom? Were you told 3 weeks originally?

We recently had our bathroom done and it took a week and a half. That was for full rip out, including a hideous plastic ceiling, plastering of ceiling and 3 walls, new skirting, tiling of floor and one and a bit walls, some plumbing work and fitting the new suite. There was a day and a half when no work happened while the plaster dried out.

We have a separate toilet so didn't have that issue.

Also, our plumber organised all the other tradesmen so we didn't have to faff on with that and I'm pretty certain it would have run less smoothly if we'd organised them all ourselves.

We had ours done in Jan/Feb. It took 3 weeks, again due to replastering/plaster going off. They deliberately didn’t rush as we had an alternate toilet & shower to use. They did say that they have worked on bathrooms where they’ve replumbed the toilet in each night.

My bathroom is being done at the moment. I've got a toilet and shower screen in my lounge...... deep breaths. It will so be worth it!

We had 2 small bathrooms done in 2 weeks.

We've also DIY'd an only bathroom refit and it was fine. Nerve racking when we pulled the loo out but the new one was working by teatime.

We've ended up using a bucket of water for the flush at various times. Just empty the bucket down the loo instead of using the cistern - very effective and not a big deal.

We've just had ours done and it took 8 days. We stayed elsewhere for the first 5 days. We had a working toilet from day 5 and a working shower from day 6.

@adulthumanwolf sorry for the delay, been manic at work.

Was supposed to be 2 weeks. We do have a big bathroom, but we are also having a boiler in and airing cupboard assembled.

More to do with the plumbers children being sick.

We were actually only without a shower for three days. Not so bad as in-laws live 5 minutes away, so we were able to use there's. Bathroom will hopefully be finished Tuesday next week better be got decorators in

Ours should be finished by friday which will be 3 weeks.
We have another loo so not a problem.
But your fitter should be able to plan to give you at least a toilet every evening, but not during the day. It just makes things slower and more complicated
