Relocation, Shoreditch job possibility

Hi all
We are considering a a move to the area around London (just assuming we can't afford London itself) - partner is being considered for a job in Shoreditch - I don't know the area at all, but would love to move closer to the capital.
Can you please recommend areas to live.

Decent commute (e.g. a direct train/tube), ideally not much more than 45 minutes
Affordable family property (three bedrooms minimum, garden)
Safe (not high on crime)
Village feel but close to good amenities - e.g a good pool (bonus with slides!), good sports facilities for the kids.
Near woods/forest and water would be a bonus.

Thank you.

MrsP, we will definitely rent first, but I'd like an idea of where we could buy if we do settle down there. I don't want to waste years renting though, I'd rather try and whittle things down to a few good areas. Though this feels very difficult!

BSL, thanks, had not found that website. Still good to hear personal recommendations for areas.
I do fancy south more as partly, though the job is in Shoreditch, his industry is a little unstable, as in, per company, but you can generally move around - and there are a few more of his type of industries south and towards Brighton, so that's something I am bearing in mind - would mean he has options to move jobs and look that way, rather than be a little more restricted in a few years again if having to stay nearer the East area or central London.

Should I try and find something in within zone six (or closer) to make commuting easier/cheaper?
If so, anywhere that fulfils my other requirements (village feel/safe)?
Quite liking the feel of Surrey/Kent.
