Tell me about your patios

Hi!

I'd like a nice patio area in my garden but don't know what a good size would be to comfortably seat say 6-8 people around a table plus a space for a bbq.

Garden is 8m wide, and approx 20m long so I'd probably have it the full width, but unsure how deep to go to look proportionate with the rest of the garden.

How big are your patios?

Thanks in advance!!

We have the same width patio and got ours done last year. Builder suggested about 3m at least deep but we have a shallower garden . This has given us enough space for what we need. With 20m you could probably go to 5m deep comfortably.

Don’t have it the full width. That just looks like a strip.

Try and think about planting around it. What would soften the edges. Having grass next to it makes the grass difficult to cut neatly where it joins the patio.

You need around 5 x 3 m minimum. But think circular or how you can use different materials. We have York stone and I love it.

Sorry to contradict the pp but I think a full width patio looks neater and gives the appearance of a wider garden. If you leave areas as the sides you’ll have to plant and maintain them but if you go the full way across you can put pots at the side or have more space for furniture. Ours goes almost fully across (we had to leave about a ft each side for if we ever need to replace fence, this strip is shingled). Overall it’s about 8-9m across. One side of the patio is a dining area with space for bbq and the other side is an informal seating area. We have a few planters with box balls but otherwise it’s plain.
With a garden your size I’d go for 4-5m deep, you need plenty of space to move chairs out from tables etc. Also I’d you have a big patio and your chairs aren’t too heavy you can move them along to stay in the sun or shade.
