Mixer shower only letting out cold water

Brrrrrr chilly morning in our house! The actually pipe is hot and so is the back of the tap, but the water is cold. The sink gives out hot water too. I think something has broken inside but not sure what. Anyone have any experience of this? Is it an easy fix? Or do I need to buy a new mixer tap?

Ours went awhile ago and it was silly how long we left it to fix seeing as it is a pretty straight forward job. Basically yes we needed a new mixed tap- ordered and fitted ourselves solved the problem straight away.

have you got a hot-water cylinder?

What colour?

A photo of the mixer might help.

Is it a twisty handle one?

On ours the spring thing inside corroded and couldn’t open the hot water valve bit any more.

The shower control valve is probably not allowing the hot water to mix with the cold. Get a plumber out.

Minnie881 · 26/02/2019 16:18

Personally I wouldn't bother with a plumber. It's a pretty easy job to take the valve off and check the hot water side and see if it is blocked/corroded and then just a case of ordering a new one. Our plumber quoted £250 to fix and we did it for £90 by just buying the part.

New shower will be around £70 - dead easy to change it yourself. Most likely the thermostat has broken.

Murinae · 26/02/2019 16:23

We changed the thermostatic valve ourselves. It was quite easy.

Biancadelrioisback · 26/02/2019 21:37

We only paid £100 for the shower so I really don't want to pay more than that to fix it. It's not even a year old yet! Fuming
It's like a metal tube with a pipe for the shower coming out the bottom (wall mounted shower) and a twisty knob on the left which turns it on and off and a twisty knob on the right for the temperature control and thermostatic button thing.
I'm so skint I really can't afford to buy a new one right now...

Maybe it's a bar shower. They're fairly cheap. If you know the maker's name you might be able to get parts, but it (should be) is installed so it is easy to remove and swap for new.

Tell us about that cylinder please.

Take the filter out and soak in de-scaler for an hour or two then put back in. Lots of YouTube videos showing you how.
