moving house.
new place has steep stairs which are bare, smooth wood.
death trap quite slippery.
how durable is sisal?
other 'non slip' coverings that don't look too bad?

Just go with carpet. Even a runner will make a big difference. Sisal has to be glued to the floor and can be a nightmare to get any spills out of.

that's my worry. that it's a buggee to clean.

it is a bugger to clean. Don't do it!

what carpet would be the best non-slip option?
doormat type?

We had really steep stairs in our old house. We had wool mix carpet, the cut pile sort. The only time I ever slipped was rushing wearing well-worn flip flops.

I used to love the look of sisal on the stairs until I worked in an office with sisal on the stairs.

A girl slipped from the top to the bottom and needed hospital treatment not for any broken bones but the sisal had damaged her skin really badly and needed dressings for ages afterwards.

I have hard floors throughout my house BUT carpet on the stairs.
