What walls to paint what? Lounge

How on earth do people decide what walls to paint what colour? First time I've had to decorate a house and feel out of my depth Confused We like dulex perfectly taupe & just walnut but not sure if we should use one or the other or a mix of both, especially with the chimney breast and alcoves. I have uploaded a (really bad!! Blush) layout of my living room. OH thinks perfectly taupe (darker shade) behind the sofa & on the chimney breast and the lighter shade everywhere else but won't this look odd? I'm baffled.

What has everyone else done?

Oh I do love a feature wall, but apparently they are out of fashion these days (I couldn't care less, personally).

I think it sounds lovely, go for it. You can always paint over it if you don't like it.

Oh actually looking at your picture, I'd either do alcoves or chimney breast in the darker, and maybe leave the sofa a lighter colour?

We currently have white everywhere so I might start with doing the chimney breast darker and then going from there. I have no eye for things like this, thanks for replying!!

I’m not really one for a feature wall so will leave that to your personal preference. I can however endorse Just Walnut. It’s a great colour, very neutral, goes with everything, not too cold or too warm. I have it in my kitchen diner and hall/stairs/landing and am about to do my entire cellar in it!

Oooh that's promising sunny Grin I think I'm going to end up using it in my bedroom too

My sister has just done a big extension and is doing Just Walnut everywhere too.

I am usually a sucker for farrow and ball but I make the exception for Just Walnut!
I have f&b Pavillion grey in my bedroom and I absolutely love it. It’s so calming.

We had perfectly taupe in our bedroom it’s lovely- quite purple esque though so be warned. Might be a bit much for living room

We have eqyptian cotton in our living room and love it. A good neautral that has a bit of everything- it’s warm and cosy but still bright.

I would paint all the walls the same colour. You need something high contrast or wallpaper for a feature wall and they can easily look naff

Do the whole room Just Walnut! It's a beautiful colour.
