Can hear every movement from next door neighbours

I moved to a rented house a few weeks ago and didn't hear much movement at all until more recently, I can't work out which side it's coming from but it sounds like their house is made entirely out of loose floorboards! They haven't stopped bounding up and downstairs all day and night and what sounds like constantly stomping around upstairs. It's already driving me mad.

I can't hear voices or music or anything, just the constant thumping of movement. I think a large group of them moved in after I moved in here which would explain why it's non-stop...

I can't move out else I honestly would consider it. It sounds like it's coming from above me, imagine living in a ground floor flat with rickety floorboards directly above where you're sitting with the people wearing heels. Except it's next door and there are (thick?) walls between us!

Any ideas on cheap soundproofing or if this could be grounds to speak to their agency to ... I don't know, secure the floorboards and lay down a carpet if there aren't any? Doubt it though.

Thank you

I have no advice I'm afraid but I did chuckle slightly reading your post when suddenly all hell broke loose in the flat upstairs. And when I say all hell broke loose, I actually mean "someone arrived home". Just that. A few people going inside, chatting, heading into the living room... it sounded like a bloody riot. We're in a group of 4 flats (2 up 2 down) and only the downstairs flats are occupied normally. Next door's has been empty for years and thankfully, my upstairs neighbour is almost never there. He spends one or two nights there every few months. It's bloody brilliant. If he was home every day I would have to reconsider living here!

OP, try and catch your neighbour for a friendly over the garden fence pleasant chat. Introduce yourself. Tell them you've just moved in and ask them if your noise is bothering them at all. Make mention of the fact that there seems to be a lack of soundproofing and you're worried that they can hear you like you can hear them. If they're a decent sort they might take the hint. They might ask you if you can hear them etc. Whatever you do, keep it really really friendly. Sometimes neighbour feuds start up when they could have been solved instantly with just a tiny bit of understanding on both sides. Loud neighbours are far less hassle than intentionally noisy ones or ones that get into threats, fights, vandalism or other unpleasantness.

Not that you will be able to do anything about this, but is it an older house that has possibly been divided up? My current house is like this. I think that some of the floor boards run under the walls into both houses, and I often think there's someone upstairs in mine when it's just the elephants next door. Its super annoying, so you have my sympathy

If its an old conversion (or older build) the regs about soundproofing used to be non existent. Sounds like your neighbours don't have carpets?
Other than learning to live with it - neighbours often make the same noises at the same time of day, so once you know their routine it might not seem so bad, your only option would be to move.
I bought a conversion years ago, and was horrified on the first night to hear my downstairs neighbour snoring in his bedroom beneath mine. Every little sound travelled between the floors. I sold up after a year, though not solely for that reason, but it was a factor. You have my sympathy.

Thanks for the replies

Fucking annoyingly, the neighbour on the other side does this really annoying activity for over an hour each day and it sounds like my house is caving in no matter which room I'm in! I think it's some kind of gym or punching bag!

I think it's a weight system and punching bag! But it's during the day so I can't say anything!

I'm fucked off if you can't tell 😂
