Basement - exercise and workbench?

We live in a small flat but also have a room in the basement. It has a window below ground level (almost opposite the door, which is at one end of the room).
We currently use it to house all our books and a small table for DC at one end. In the middle we have an exercise bike and other sports stuff and then desk with printer and a cupboard as storage.

We need a table for DD as she starts school this year and am thinking about taking the table out and putting in a work bench so we have somewhere to do small mending jobs, some wood work etc

Is this a bad idea? Is it too unhealthy to do wood work in the same room we do exercise/kids play in? Will the dust destroy my books? Is there way of partitioning effectively enough to stop the dust spreading?
