Hi - any advice on where would suit a couple of 21 year old professionals males who are looking to rent a 2 bed house or apartment in a Leeds suburb and commute to their job in Bradford. Am I right in thinking Horsforth wd be a good option? Thank you ..

Horsfoth yes, but could be expensive. Look at south Leeds as it's an easier drive to Bradford. Also Pudsey, Farsley area might be an option.

geordiepidge · 23/07/2018 22:08

Whereabouts in Bradford and do they plan to drive there or get the bus/train? I used to work in West Bradford and agree with the recommendation for Pudsey, especially if they're using public transport. Horsforth only if they'd drive but it's a bit of a pain at rush hour. Kirkstall is nice and cheaper than Horsforth but again only if they'd drive.

He will be based for a year at Broad Street in Bradford for Virgin Media. I have never been to Bradford and he starts September so am getting a little stressed! I think they both fully intend to drive as they believe the office is not right near the station but I still think occasionally the train route may be useful and a bit less stressful. I haven’t looked at Kirkstall yet so thank you. He is sporty so a David Lloyd or gym/tennis club wd be great but unlikely I know! Thank you so much for your reply xx

Saltaire nr Shipley is very nice. Easy quick train access to the centre of Bradford

Byebyebye · 24/07/2018 07:24

Horsforth is v nice place to live in Leeds. Also pretty pricey.

Pudsey would be a better option as it’s closer to Bradford centre, still nice but more affordable.

StereophonicallyChallenged · 24/07/2018 07:37

I'm in Kirkstall, and it's a bastard getting to Bradford at rush hour! Is it virgin media near Dick Lane?? If so, no train station that's handy, so I'd definitely look at Pudsey or Farsley if it was me. Avoid as much of the ring road as possible Smile Plenty of people rent round that part of Bradford too and houses are generally cheaper than up the road in a Leeds postcode.

BikeRunSki · 24/07/2018 07:38

Horsforth is lovely but ££, although not as £££ as some parts of Leeds!

Saltsire is lovely, but possibly not if you are 21 and in receipt of your first salary! It’s more about families, arty stuff, outdoor stuff and WI etc. I have a couple of friends there now, in their 40s though, who love it. Not so great if you want to go out drinking and clubbing though. Excellent trains into Leeds though.

GahWhatever · 24/07/2018 07:44

Broad street is less than 5 mins walk from Forster Square station.
I'd have a look at places serviced from that station and concentrate your search along those routes.
I think that they have a routes out to Skipton, Ilkley, Leeds stopping at local stations on the way.

CosmicCanary · 24/07/2018 07:49

From Horsforth the drive to Bradford in rush hour is on average 45 minutes. Thats if there are no incidents which can happen 3 times a week and can add 1/2 hour to the journey time. DP does this commute daily.

Bradford Foster Square train station is 6 mins walk from Broad Street.
Train takes 20 mins from Kirkstall train station.
Kirkstall is very close to Horsforth and Headingly ( student centeral) so good night life. There is also the gym on Kirkstall road plus cinema and food outlets.

Kidssendingmenuts · 24/07/2018 07:54

Why don't they live in Bradford. Some lovely areas and rent is cheaper than Leeds. Bingley, Shipley and Saltaire are lovely and have great train links into bradford. Stay away from the centre of Bradford and manningham and frizinghall if you can. Train will be about 10-15 mins commute if that xx

GahWhatever · 24/07/2018 08:27

half mile from Kirkstall forge station
Kirkstall forge 17 mins from Forster Square and close to Horsforth and Kirkstall.
No Lloyds gym in walking distance but 3 others and a leisure centre.

Loopytiles · 24/07/2018 08:28

Pudsey/Farsley.

Sammilouwho · 24/07/2018 08:33

We live in Bradford, (in an area mentioned on this thread for being bad haha - it’s a lovely area for families though) Shipley is brilliant for getting into Bradford and not so bad to live in. Saltaire is lovely but only if you like history and quaintness, could also try Bingley. But I would also second (third and fourth) Pudsey.

WomanWithAltitude · 24/07/2018 08:33

I'd second all the recommendations above.

However, he's 21, and he must have visited Bradford in order to attend interview at least. What are his views?

Is it normal now for parents to choose where their adult offspring live?

Sge62 · 24/07/2018 18:56

Ha ha! Probably not but he hasn’t started looking yet and starts in September so am just preparing incase I get the chance to offer an opinion! x

It's not Horsforth but it is close to work (5 mins from bed to Broad Street including a 2 minute shower) , in a block with secure parking, quite nice looking. 2 double bedrooms.
www.zoopla.co.uk/to-rent/details/48487446?search_identifier=7dcf1bcc2e57f8b99d26b507690ac607 better access to city centre pubs and clubs and student life too (presuming they're recent grads).

Sge62 · 25/07/2018 17:52

Thank you! So thoughtful of you and really appreciate that. Will have a look xx

OP, I think you likely mean Broad Lane, not Street, which is in South Bradford.

Unfortunately Bradford is traffic choked at peak times and it is not easy to get anywhere fast.

Pudsey is the closest Leeds suburb to BD and the train station is still 2.5 miles away from VM. There is a bus (508) which takes 22 minutes which isn't too bad imo.

If you google map anywhere he's thinking of living and choose the public transport option it should give him an idea of commutes. For example move slightly across to Calverley (which is really lovely) and the bus time goes up to 47 minutes.

A young lad came to work with me from outside the area and he moved to Pudsey to rent and liked it so much he's buying there. It's also very close to Leeds itself.

serbska · 06/08/2018 16:26

I;d go for Leeds city center or Pudsey

Some of the other suggestions are a bit mumsey!

I lived in north Leeds and worked in Bradford about 1/4 of the year... the drive was terrible!

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 06/08/2018 17:48

I'd go for Farsley over Pudsey personally. Kirkstall has some nice pubs, and is close to Headingley which is a bit livelier. Horsforth is nice but I wouldn't say it's particularly young professional territory.

ejk10 · 06/08/2018 17:57

I live in Farsley! He could get the train in from Pudsey train station - 15 mins journey every 15 mins if he didn't want to drive. Farsley and Pudsey are really nice areas - rented property is averagely priced - about £500 a month for 2 bed apartment.
Horsforth is lovely as well but a pain to drive to Bradford.

Sge62 · 06/08/2018 19:38

Thank you for all the help. He went up last week and they have found a place in Headingley. It looks nice and they are happy which is the main thing. It was nearly Kirkstall but Headingley was favourite. All the advice was gratefully received by them and its now sorted! Thank you. Sue x

Headingly will be super fun for them - so many fun pubs and bars. Hope they enjoy :-)

Thank you 😊
