Help boarding the loft

So I need to put boards down in my loft. I've bought the boards but have no idea where to go from there 😳 help!

Do any pipes or cables go above the joists in the loft for a start...

what are the dimensions of the boards

what are the dimensions of the "joists" in the loft? What is their spacing, from centre of one to centre of the next?

What weight are you hoping to put on them?

Oh blimey I have no idea on measurements. In my simple mind I just wanted to board a small area possibly 4ft by 4ft just to put the Christmas decal up there and maybe some other boxes or storage. Nothing too heavy.
