Window & door fitters / builders - Orpington

Hi, little one will be due in about a month and we've been trying to get the house in order, but struggling a bit!

We're trying to get french doors installed where there's a window, and other windows replaced and resized, but everyone so far has had crazy prices. Everything they say about builders seems to be true! It's about a day's work to enlarge the hole and fit the doors, so how can someone ask for £1000+ to do this? We can get the doors for about £600 and a day's work should only be worth a few hundred quid right?

Can window fitters do this sort of "building" work? But they'll want to sell me more expensive doors and windows and we're on a budget. Are there any decent builders out there who aren't trying to overcharge for a day's work?

We're in Orpington, don't suppose anyone knows of any reputable, good value builders or window fitter types do they?

You will get ehta you pay for lucy and to be honest if anyone will do that job for a couple of hundred quid then i wouldnt let them touch my house.
Big unknown...There may not be a lintel above a window.. making it a structural job.
It will be atleast a 2 man team... the reason they price higher than just for that is if it went wrong you would expect them to come back and fix it for free wouldnt you.
I know a very good fitter and i know for a fact he would be charging 1500 minimum for this, alot of fitters wont put in doors they dont supply because quality levels are very different... no doubt your 600 pound door is the cheapest you can find.. therefore could be rubbish quality.. whos pays if it falls apart in 6 months?
Tradesmen have to make profit, pay for vans, insurance, tools etc. There will also be the rubble and old window to remove and making good the plaster inside.
Its a bigger job than you think
