Painted stairs

My carpets on stairs need replacing but have to wait a whilst we have messy works done upstairs.
Anyone have cheap ideas for stairs? Was thinking to have the stairs painted although thinking it will make it slippery?

I saw painted stairs on Houzz - they looked great. Neighbours of ours have done it too (arty ones) and they are very happy with the end result.

Having slipped and fallen down a set I wouldn't ever have painted stairs, especially with children. Kids in socks, slipper socks or even slippers without rubber soles are going to slip and fall and it's a nightmare. Looks pretty but unless you have grippy soles slippers or always wear shoes you run the risk

Bad idea. Carpets are less slippery and far less noisy.

Our neighbours have small children and they don't wear shoes in the house. Must be a special paint they use.

I wouldn't do it because of the noise every time someone uses them.

Hmmm - thanks for that and yes safety first I think. Manly carpets for a few more years!

We have painted stairs & while not ideal they're not slippy. I think the key is just don't use gloss!
