Moving to Stockport/Cheshire

Could anyone recommend nice affordable areas to live with a good secondary school around the Stockport/Cheshire/Derbyshire area. We are moving from the north east as I have just got a new job just outside Stockport, bordering the peak district. DH has an interview in Sale, however our budget is small, max £140k and areas in between the 2 are well out of our price bracket. I just don't want us to end up in a grotty area or having to travel for hours to get to work. HELP!!!

Heald Green and Handforth are both nice and more affordable parts of Cheshire - near Stockport, and close by for secondary schools in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Altrincham.

Try Hazel Grove too. It's got some nice restaurants and pubs.

The A6 gets extremely busy in rush hour so if the route to your new job involves traveling on that you might need to allow more time than you think.

Hi there everyone,

We think this thread would be better on the Property boards, so we'll be moving it there shortly.

Where is your job based, can you give the town/suburb? I live just in Derbyshire and some places are easier to get to than others and you might want specific transport links, especially if your DH needs to get to Sale.

I'm going to be based in Mellor. Thanks

You won’t get much for £140k in south manchester unfortunately. You might want to look more at Tameside: Staylbridge, etc. Which is nearish to Mellor. it is cheaper but a bit rural but you would probably need a train to Sale.

That helps, but there isn't much in your price bracket, plus getting to Sale could be tricky from places convenient for Mellor. Look at Hyde, Offerton, Reddish - tend to be older housing stock but with good sized rooms. I've assumed you'll want 3 bedrooms.
