How much did your removals cost?

We’ve just been quoted for a full packing service. Three bedrooms, three receptions, garage with bikes etc. We do probably have more stuff like books, music, pictures etc than a lot of people but we’re definitely not hoarders!

We’re moving an hour and a half away. Quote has come in at £4800 plus another £1000 once you’ve added insurance, delay waiver etc.

I’ve just recovered enough to post...

Am I just horribly out of touch? We last moved five years ago and a full pack -admittedly from a smaller house and a shorter journey - was £1500.

We’re in the South East.

Also south east. Full packing for a 3 bed terrace plus full loft plus v full garage was just under £1500 last year. Included flat pack rebuilding. Had 2 quotes at a similar level then pickfords was more like 2k

We are moving from Wiltshire to Kent, so about two and half hours, and we have a three bed with one reception, a small amount of furniture, piano and around two thousand books and our quote is £1535 with packing. Your house is a lot larger than mine and we don't have much furniture but it does seem a bit high.

RhythmStix · 09/07/2018 20:47

I moved 5 years ago from a biggish 3 bed 2 recep into a property two streets away and that cost me about 2.5k. London.
That quote seems very high OP.

SavoyCabbage · 09/07/2018 20:55

We are moving twenty minutes away and are paying £1060 for a three bedroom three story house with packing. We've loads of stuff.

zebrapig · 09/07/2018 21:11

We're a three bed terrace with a full loft, moving half a mile. Two quotes around £1100, third quote is £600, all with full packing. Cheapest quote also includes emptying the loft so we are going with them.

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated. We have another company quoting tomorrow so fingers crossed! Sdaisy do you mind telling me who you used?

Thanks everyone.

Just received first quote of £2035 for 4-bed house including them packing, but excluding their insurance (as removals are covered under our contents cover).

It is a 10-minute drive between houses. They have estimated 1 day for packing and then 2 days for moving the stuff (called “shuttling” apparently, as we’ve got a month crossover between properties so don’t need to do everything in a rush).

AnneElliott · 09/07/2018 21:24

ThT seems high. We paid £600 but that was 6 years ago.

Minimonkeysmum · 09/07/2018 21:39

Just under £700 9months ago - 2bed flat into a 3bed house in London. It was the cheapest quote we had, but they were excellent!

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 09/07/2018 21:40

Moving from a biggish 4 bed with garage was just over £1k. Only 1.5 miles away. Included overnight storage for one night too.

Get lots of quotes. We went for the cheapest but they also happened to come recommended by loads of people and I couldn't fault them.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 09/07/2018 21:40

Sorry, just to add, that didn't include packing - they supplied the boxes and we did it ourselves.

greendale17 · 09/07/2018 21:44

OP you are being ripped off completely

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 09/07/2018 21:51

greendale, I think you may be right...

I paid €3000 approx 5 years ago to move from a 3 bed terrace in Dublin to Somerset.

I did all the packing though.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 09/07/2018 22:03

I’ve just noticed there’s an extra charge, not included in the quoted figure, of £25 per hour, per man, after 3.00pm! That could really add up!

Just paid £2,800 plus VAT to move from France back to London, to move out was £3,500 - 4 bed house but lightly furnished. Move out included packing service which was one guy the day before (wouldn't recommend).

macaronip1e · 09/07/2018 22:17

Ouch - seems high to me. We moved 3 years ago; £1,200 to pack up 3 bed house plus garage full of “stuff” and move about 2 miles across town (in SE England; just out of London)

Earslaps · 09/07/2018 22:35

We paid £1400 including packing and insurance for a three bed plus garage three years ago. We only filled one large removal lorry and it was about a mile. The other quote was £2000 for the same.

We are getting into removal season (lots of people trying to move in summer holidays) so they might feel they can increase their prices.

We initially thought we were moving the last weekend in July and could only get two companies to quote as the others were all booked up, and the big companies wanted a £250 premium on that day. In the end we moved the week after.
