Hi. Any advice would be appreciated.
We're looking at moving to Basingstoke. We've visited, but it's also great to get opinions of those who live or have lived there. Wondering about best areas to live and also recommend infant /primary schools. Many thanks!

Bad luck, all I will suggest is go for the outskirts and the villages if you can, as the rest of the place is London overspill depressing place.

I lived and grew up in Basingstoke for a good while

Chineham is a decent area , about middling I would say price wise decent infant and junior

(They are currently digging up the roundabout nearby though)

Outskirts are better

Avoid Popley , Brighton hill, buckskin (without outing myself I worked in a capacity in those areas I promise you wouldn't want to live)

If you can go further out Overton and Oakley are higher end and very pleasant but farish from main town

Main town had a regeneration about 15 years ago Better than it was

Secondary schools are to be carefully picked my niece now attends the one I did and it is fine but there are one or two dodgy schools

It's honestly fine it has had a boring reputation in the past but it's fairly solid and a far cry from the old London overspill days

Hello - I do realise this is an old thread but just wondering if anyone knows / lives in RG21 that can share their latest insights please? We are looking to move out of London and would like to explore Basingstoke (particularly the new build 3 / 4 bed house)

Thanks in advance

Dinosauraddict · 31/10/2019 11:38

@littlecontis RG21 is mixed. You have lovely areas within it (south view which is a really nice conservation area and old historic ruins) and awful areas (oakridge - to be avoided). Which new builds are you looking at?

littlecontis · 31/10/2019 11:41

@Dinosauraddict thanks for your reply. We did some more research and unfortunately train tickets into London are more expensive that we'd like so we won't be looking to move to Basingstoke anymore. Thanks so much!

Flappyfishy · 31/10/2019 14:27

I live in Basingstoke and work in London 3 days a week, the train fair can indeed be horrific so it certainly needs to be offset against your salary!

Parking near station - £9.80 a day
Train fair into London - £114 a week (if I was only doing two days it would be cheaper to get a return for £44 per day)
Underground - £4.80 per day

We bought in Jan 2016 and based on local house prices, we think our house has increased in value by approximately 50K or so since then, however as we're not looking to sell for a while I guess it's totally pointless anyway!

Hope you find somewhere nice to live littlecontis Smile

@Flappyfishy you could cut down your parking through annual ticket?
