Banister come off wall

I live in an old house (1930s) which was not kept in good nick by the previous owners.

My DP has just managed to wrench the top part of the stair banister off the wall: looking at it the plaster behind it was screwed into has just crumbled. It looks like there used to be 3 screws but only one was actually holding that part of the banister up.

We are not good at DIY - can we just take the banister off, fill up the hole and screw it back in? Or is this a bigger job requiring someone who knows what they're doing?

what size, shape and depth are the holes?

Have you got an electric hammer drill and some masonry bits?
