Nice side of the fence?

Who gets the nice side of a fence? Is it the person who is responsible for it ?

Apparently not but I don't care, I am paying for the fence and I want the nice side.

The person paying for it chooses.

Some say there is a convention for giving the neighbours the nice side. My theory is that came from a preference for security over look. We have no neighbours to one side, and the road gets the "nice" side because it makes it harder for anyone to climb into our garden.

The neighbours getting the 'nice' side of the fence is to do with where the fence posts sit. If its your fence, it should be erected with the fence line on the boundry, therefore the fence posts should be on your side of the fence, otherwise you've put your fence posts on their land. If you want to have the nice side, you still have to put the fence posts on your side, but you then lose the width of the fence posts to your neighbour.

If you are putting up a fence where the panels slot in, it makes no difference as far as I can see. If you pay for it, you get the nice side!
