Project Kitchen Up-cycle/Counter Top

Hi There,
We're just about to complete on our very first property purchase (finally).
The kitchen needs some updating (Formica counter tops, laminated kitchen cupboards etc).
Sadly we have no funds left for a brand new kitchen so we thought whilst we wait and save (for no doubt years and years) that in the interim we will up-cycle the kitchen, paint the cupboards, paint splash back tiles and new counter tops.
Has anyone had any experience just replacing an old counter top with wood/stone?
I walked into a local independent kitchen shop the other day and the staff looked at me as if I were speaking Martian......

TIA :-)

Get a joiner to fit you a new worktop. A kitchen company will want to sell you a whole kitchen hence they didn't want to help.

Don’t get wooden worktops. We’ve had them for 6 years and it’s nearly ended my marriage. Every drop of water needs to be wiped up, and they scratch and it shows. Keeping them nice is a massive pain in the arse!

We have wooden worktops and you just have to Osmo them a couple of times a year.

Thanks mangocoveredlamb. I hear you re wooden worktops - we have them in our current place. Sadly they look book then formica worktops and is cheaper than stone - so we will probably go the way of the wood as our interim fix.

Have you had a look on Ebay OP, you can get pre owned kitchens. There might be something that fits in with what you're looking for.
