Talk to me about scrap metal yards?

I have a (disassembled) greenhouse to get rid of. How do scrap metal yards work? One near me offers a collection service. Do they pay you for the scrap? Are they likely to also take the glass?

I think it depends what it's made of, they would pay decent rates for aluminium copper lead etc, but anything steel or iron round here the only way is leave it by the kerb and wait a few days. Glass they wouldn't take unless it's a general waste service, but the local recycling centre would take it.

I think its unlikely they would collect such a trivial amount and even if they did, well the charge would likely exceed the scrap value. Best to transport it there yourself.

I'd take it to the council tip (or household recycling centre as they call it now)

Glass is heavy and sharp, you can put it in plastic storage crates to carry.

I would go to your local recycling centre. That way you can get rid of both parts together.

If the greenhouse is relatively savalagable and could be rebuilt to be of use to someone, I'd suggest pop on a local Facebook page as 'free to collector'. Even if it has panes of glass missing they are easy to replace.

Find your local allotment and go speak to them/place an ad,free greenhouse assuming its salvageable..
