Interim move? Or stay put?

I'm a 50 year old single parent with 19 year old son still living at home (2 older DC moved out and settled).
In about 8-10 years I plan to retire and move out the area. I really like my house but there are quite a few things I'd like to change - some would cost a lot of money, some aren't possible, including disposing of a very odd Nextdoor neighbour Grin. A house with what I want wouldn't necessarily cost more as I could downsize a bit.
So how do I decide whether to stick it out here or buy something else locally?

Why don't you buy something you really like now [maybe downsize and get some money in the bank from the sale of present house] and hopefully have better neighbours, have fun getting it the way you like it. You will learn things along the way, try different styles, gain experience and at least have a go rather than stay put.

Then in 8-9 years time decide where you want to settle, and at least you won't have spent those years with an odd neighbour and wondering if you should have moved.

Any chance of renting your place out and renting an interim place yourself? That way you may get a small income from your property (depending on tax situation) but more importantly, you can change your mind and move back or sell up at the end of the lease.
