I really really want a smeg. I want one SO much.

I just can't justify it though. I would go for a graded one, but there is nothing available at the moment that isn't a bit too scratched.

So I have started to look at Gorenje, Swan, Montpellier and Servis. I like the look of Servis most, but the reviews are terrible.

I'm worried Montpellier will be a bit tinny?

Has anyone got one of the brands and can advise me? I have to decide by Monday after dithering for weeks! Thanks.

Well don't feel too sad, I've had two Smeg Fab32 fridge freezers over the last 15 years. The motor lasts for ever, the seals and trim and trays are shit!

TheSingingKettle · 16/06/2018 21:45

I know it’s not what you’ve asked but I wouldn’t be too disappointed about not getting a Smeg. I’ve got a couple of Smeg appliances and they’re all fur coat and no knickers, I wouldn’t buy anything from them again.

Saddlesore · 17/06/2018 20:30

I thought I wanted a Smeg, but then I read the reviews. I bought this
www.argos.co.uk/product/3467107

It’s absolutely fine.

We have the gorenje. Great size and design. I’d say the cons are that there’s no alarm so if the door doesn’t shut properly you don’t realise (happened a few times if we fill the door shelf as it causes it to bounce back rather than shut) and it makes random noises/can be loud. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another.

I'm in the market for a retro fridge. I knew of 2 on your list op but not the other two, so thank you! Also I would not buy a Smeg simply because I don't want people to walk into my kitchen and comment on the fridge! We all have our reasons and this is mine!

LuckyKitty13 · 17/06/2018 22:17

I've got a cream swan fridge freezer, and microwave and dishwasher! All totally fab!

loveka · 18/06/2018 20:39

Thanks! With the Gorenje, is the door just coloured plastic, or is it enamelled (or whatever it is) like tge Smeg?

We have a cream gorenje, had it for 7 years now and I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend them.
I believe the door is coloured plastic but may be wrong.
I wanted a Smeg but at the time they were not only mega bucks but the energy efficiency wasn't as highly rated.

I have a red servis and love it. Had it for nearly 2 years now and no problems. It was cheaper than buying a boring silver one and it's so much bigger inside and has a little ice box too. Can recommend.

I have the Swan fridge freezer, microwave and dishwasher. I love them and they look gorgeous.

DH on the other hand hates the dishwasher as he says the baskets don't fit enough stuff in - however secretly I think he is pants at filling it.

bawbles · 18/06/2018 21:31

The gorenje door is arched plastic I think, magnets do not stick to it but they do to the sides.

Capacity wise the gorenje seemed much better than gorenje when I looked

loveka · 19/06/2018 10:25

I do really like the look of the Servis. What is the door made of?

We have a Gorenji. I like it. I don't think it's enameled, but you can't really tell to look at it.

Singlebutmarried · 19/06/2018 14:24

Have you looked at Big Chill appliances?

I keep looking and can’t justify the price 😕

I had a Servis that I used for about nine years until I discovered that it wasn't actually cold enough (had to refrigerate some medication so bought a thermometer). I have no idea how long it had been like that but at its coldest, it was around 10 degrees inside.

Maizie83 · 19/06/2018 15:44

We just got a Swan SR11010CN and it looks great and is nice and quiet! Thought about Gorenje too, but was a little out of our budget.

A friend has had the same Swan as ours for years and it's given them no grief. My main concern was about its durability as I've heard the low budget retro fridge/ freezers die young Sad! But I bought on the Currys website and spent an extra £100 on a 5-year warranty so if it does die we can get another or put the cost against a better quality fridge (having learned our lesson). I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the build and the look of it when it arrived. It's a little smaller than a Smeg but that suits us.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 19/06/2018 20:09

Just looked at my servis but can't actually tell what the door is made of. It looks pretty good though.
Mine is definitely cold though.

theothermum · 19/06/2018 20:48

We have Gotenje and can highly recommend it. We have other appliances from SMEG and as with the PP - they look nice but the functionality is shite.

AStatelyPleasureDome · 20/06/2018 04:35

Sorry if this comment comes too late, but we have a Service one in red and it's excellent, had it for several years and no problems.
