Grantham property - Advice needed

Hi everyone,
I am relocating to Lincolnshire and looking to buy a property in Grantham. I am hoping to buy a 3 bedroom house and let 1/2 bedroom(s) to get some help with the mortgage.
My questions are:

  • Is Grantham really as bad as some of the comments I have seen online? Drugs, gangs, chavs, etc? What is your experience of living in Grantham?
  • What is the rental market like? I suppose EA will tell me I will find it easy to attract lodgers...what would you say?
Thank you in advance!

Hi

I originally from Grantham, moved away a few years ago. I still go back every few months to visit people.

The high street has really gone down hill, there isn’t much in the way of shops. You would need to drive or catch the train to Nottingham or Lincoln for shopping.

Also, the traffic is awful, because of the terrible lay out/one way system etc.

I never had any issues with drugs or gangs or heard anything about either.

Whereabouts are you looking at buying?

Have you been for a look around the town ? It you haven’t I would definitely do this.

Good points are great schools. And there is great countryside and beautiful villages not far away.

I wouldn’t move back. But my friends and family that still live there are all happy and have no trouble.

And sorry I don’t know anything about the rental market !

Good schools (for the ones that pass the 11 plus)
Decent rail links so you can escape
Nice surrounding villages
A teenager I know was subject to an attempted mugging
I left 20 years ago and don’t miss a thing.

Thank you for your feedback, HomerDancing.
Yes I have had a good look around and will continue to do so to get a feel of the place.
I am looking in and around Houghton Road at the moment, I'm not sure that it's all that nice there, still it's within my budget! I believe that the area around Wyndham Park is meant to be nicer but I haven't seen any properties that would be suitable.

I live in Grantham close to Wyndham Park and it is really lovely this side of town, I think that Houghton Road is close to the council tip so it may smell if the wind is blowing the wrong way !

The schools are excellent and we have two grammar schools which are outstanding

There isn't much in the way of shops but Lincoln and Nottingham are within 45 minutes and have great town centres

Not sure about gangs or a drug problems, never experienced any of that, I don't think it is a big problem

I would avoid Earlsfield (area around the council swimming pool) definitely the rough end of town

We have nice cafes and bars and a cinema that is currently being built and opening next year

I used to live in Hudson Way (closer to the tip) and no issues with smell!

Houghton Road is right next to Wyndham Park which is nice and definitely the nicer side. Huntingtower and the roads around there are also good.

Far more nice cafes etc have opened up than used to be there when I lived there, lots of supermarkets etc too. It is a bit rubbish for shops.

I also rented out my place for a time, didn't ever have a problem getting people in from Spare Room etc. Being close to the train station/centre of town was a big bonus for this.

Sorry, Dysart Park!

Thank you LennyLady, WolfMcWolferson and everyone else who has commented on this thread. I appreciate the time you took to answer my questions.

I feel more confident now about moving to Grantham and buying a property there.

Have a good week everybody.
