New hall floor tiles or decorating first?

We’re looking to have our hall decorated and the carpet replaced with tiles. There are old tiles under the carpet, which I presume will need to be covered over rather than lifted, as it’s an old house and we don’t know what’s under them, they may be original but they’re a mess as sections have been replaced by concrete by previous owners. If we were having new carpet, we would definitely paint first but wondering if fitting the new tiles may affect the skirting boards, so it would be best to do that first. Also, we are going to have to wait some months for our decorator to have availability and I’m worried that the tiles that we like will be discontinued!

We had the same thing and the tiler got as many of the existing tiles up as he could, and then used a self levelling base. I would say get the tiling done first as we had some adhesive or grout splashes on the wall and skirting afterwards which did come off with some scrubbing but I wouldn’t want to scrub newly painted walls.

If you are tiling over old tiles, you might want to have the skirtings, etc removed or replaced for a good finish. Decorate afterwards. You can put roll and stroll down to protect the tiles.

Many thanks to you both for responding to me, that’s really helpful. I just need to find a good tiler now!
