House 1 or House 2?

Hello all,

My anxious google searching has not been much assistance so I thought I would try Mumsnet for some thoughts. We are currently looking to buy our first home - really exciting! - and think we have found one. We have looked at a few properties over the last few weeks, and scoured the markets every day, but nothing at all exciting has come up. Till we saw a beautiful dream house!

SO FAR: We have both recently moved away from of city living and rented in a small market town in the countryside. The idea was to rent first and see how we liked it and how we would get on with a long commute (currently 50 minutes). I do not exaggerate when I say that it has been life-affirming for both of us. We both grew up in the countryside and being surrounded by nature again feels like coming home!

From our house-buying search we found a house slightly closer to work - about 45 minutes and in another small town - which hubby likes but I weirdly and illogically I just didn't. It's a terrace in a residential part of town and the house just didn't feel like home. However it's a sensible option and ticks all the boxes. It might be nice with some fixing up - it's our number two choice.

Dream house, however, is infinitely more spacious, and we both loved it the minute we walked in. I think we could excuse this house almost anything! This one is further out, however, in a little village about an hour away and much quieter and more rural. It is however closer to a motorway connection.

I think I am just nervous to make such a big decision! My first big one really (apart from getting married of course!).

What would you do?

PS. My family thinks we are mad for moving out of the city in the first place which I think colours this whole decision!

Have you tried the commute at the time you’d be travelling?
Are there shops nearby?

Dream house!

Hiya - no not yet, maybe we’ll try this week? The village has a primary school and two decent pubs, the next village over looks like it has a shop that sells booze, lawnmowers and ham...!

I would go for first choice though check in winter/bad weather commute isn't much longer. Also if you are thinking of a baby check if schools are good and walking distance. You may need to move for secondary but that's 10 plus years, around where we are looking rural don't get in and end up miles away (hence lower house prices).

Crime check, flood check, school check, phone signal check, broadband check, natural gas check ( rather than fuel oil) mains drainage check, planning applications......all off these I did on the houses we were looking at and saved ourselves some heartache.....one we loved we discovered was very likely to be compulsory purchased due to a new road and town layout Confused

Good luck we did find somewhere and we are waiting to exchange xxx
