Replacing Windows and Doors

We have looked at a house we would like to buy however the doors are horrid - really cheap looking and outdated. I think they are MDF?

Ideally, would want to replace them!

Any recommendations on what to go for? I would like to open up the space a bit more too (if we were to buy) of course this would be cost dependent!

Oh and the windows aren't too great either - could do with replacing also.

I don't know whether it would be too much hassle. We are going to keep looking but I really love the layout of this house.

We went and looked a local new build houses to get door and window ideas. Totally pinched their doors for our extension and love them.

We are currently installing Kloeber windows and doors. They will be lovely and draft proof when they go in.
They are anthracite aluminium framed.
It will really smarten up our house.
We are on stage one at the moment and it’s about 10k. So not cheap but I do think you get what you pay for so whatever you budget, double it!

We've just had, or in the process of having, Origin aluminium windows fitted. They look great, although our local fitter is poor.

ihatethecold · 26/05/2018 14:49

If the fitter is poor how are your windows going to look good and be effective?

Humptynumpty02 · 26/05/2018 15:50

The fitting is being rectified by another set of fitters.

ihatethecold · 26/05/2018 22:29

Oh no. That’s not good

Door and window replacements are very easy fixes as long as you have the money. As for style it is always best to go with the style of the property. How old is it?

I know that Polish Interiors make good quality windows and also Allan and Brothers (Scotland or Northumberland based). Good builders should be able to measure them and then provide the dimensions to the window company.

mimibunz · 28/05/2018 19:41

Jack Brundson and Sons do fabulous windows and doors. Don’t go cheap, OP. Good quality are worth the investment.

joeybarnett · 29/05/2018 09:17

Oh ok great. Although I am just looking for prices at the moment - we haven't put an offer in yet.

Looking at new builds - that's a good idea!

Just found this quoting tool which helped: www.doubleglazingontheweb.co.uk/

Humpty Numpty - I have never considered aluminium windows before. Are they good?!

Are they like these: www.aluminiumwindowprices.co.uk/casement-windows/ because they look really modern!

joey we used that quoting tool to give us a ballpark figure for windows to see how much it would be. It was fairly accurate (Leeds.)

For the windows we went with a local double glazing company who manufacture their own windows, means you cut out the middle man and they can quote you on the spot, no hard sell, gave us quote and left us to think about it.

Their quote was about the same price per window as the online tool middle of the range quote but it included the fitting cost too. Every time we added an opener it added £100 to the window cost.

So we have a 3 panel window, with 2 full height openers and then a small top opener above the middle panel. We originally wanted the small top openers above the outside panels and then the windows under that to open too but that would mean 4 openers and we have 4 of those windows. Hence why we scaled it back saving £400.

Doors wise, it all comes down to cost. The ones we liked were £100 each but we have 13 interior doors so it was no to that.

That link is useful Joey.
My aluminium windows are being delivered tomorrow.
we have 9 windows, 3 are triple pane plus 2 doors for just under 10k.

I see that link does aluminium sash windows which will the nest stage of my window renovation project.
