How to make a double storey extension look attractive

We are wanting to extend by 6m (double storey) but only one half of the house. This would mean we could keep the best bit of the garden and also get an extra bedroom and bathroom upstairs. We will be obviously getting an architect on board etc, but what I can't get my head around is that we would have an L shaped house at the back, and I'm concerned it will look weird! Does anyone have this type of extension? How does it look? Any tips to tie in the old house and new bit?

I have a friend with this, the extension is her new kitchen/family room, with a bedroom & ensuite above. Rather than doors out the back of the family room, they go out the side and they have a patio between that and the back of the lounge, both have bifold doors, she's built a sort of square wooden loggia (as it really caught the sun), it's open on 2 sides the the garden, in the corner of the L, and has climbing plants in pots up the columns & over the beams, which shade the area a bit.

Are you sure you'd get planning permission for 6m double storey? You would have to be detached in the middle of nowhere or have a massive plot to get that here!

That’s great to hear Ariel.

We may well not get pp for it. We are detatached, and our neighbours have extended further out (double storey) but must have been years ago.

We've just extended by about 6m out -approved no problem

We have this,or rather are currently building it, we've made it dual. Aspect so can go straight to garden or to a court yard at the side

I like the dual aspect idea thanks. What does the L shape look like from the back? Did you do anything to tie it in to the main house?

It does tie to the main house in that the original house was rendered and we stripped it back and rebricked it, we are still in process of building at present.
