Neighbours Extension - AIBU

Bit of background. We live in a very nice village in a quiet cul-de-sac, all detached houses, most of the neighbours are retired but still active. It's not our first choice of house but as we send DC to public school, we cannot afford to live in the kind of house we would dearly love to.

To get to the point, our neighbours are building an very large extension which we didn't want them to build due to the distruption these kind of things cause to people's lives. Parking is an issue and we tried to, unsuccessfully, block their planning! It's been an absolute nightmare! They are doing a self-build and it is moving very slowly. We have complained to the Council about this but they are not interested as they have planning. They have a teenage son who has "gatherings" when the parents are away, couple of weekends and an annual holiday per year. His friends and him sit in the garden drinking alcohol, being loud and using language we do not approve of. We have tried to complain to the Council about this too but it has been met on deaf ears!

There was a big bust-up and none of us are on speaking terms any longer.

The extension seems to be taking forever to do and we are just fed-up with all the dust and having to look at all their building materials stacked up - it's very unsightly!

Can anyone give any advice on what we can do to stop them building?

Gummy but their DS is at public school don’t you know. He probably stays there in the holidays and everything just in case he catches sight of a cement mixer and the sheer horror of it causes him to faint. And obviously his superior education will ensure he never learns a swear word or throws parties, clearly never met my DH and his school friends.

TheRagingGirl · 18/05/2018 22:23

This must be a reverse.

m0therofdragons · 18/05/2018 22:26

Our neighbours have just applied for planning permission for a two storey extension. Do I want the noise and dirt? Not really but it's completely their right and will be our neighbours for a long time so we are nice about it.

You sound like you think you're superior but no matter how posh you think you are you still come across as a knob!Grin

Jotribiani · 18/05/2018 22:27

Get a grip you Wally. They own their house, their son is allowed to enjoy the garden with his friends! Jesus we don’t all live in silence!

Now I definitely know it's a wind up 😂😂 a funny one though, it's kept me entertained through a quiet evening at work 😂😂😂 #bbqgate

Imchlibob · 18/05/2018 22:34

Oh the horror. They have barbeques too. Such monsters.

Look. There is one way to have nothing you can't control within sight and sound of your house. You buy a big downton-abbey sized estate, or a private island, and make sure you have no neighbours.

Failing that, you will have neighbours and sometimes neighbours build extensions, have parties and barbeques, play music etc. It's called "life"

You do not have the right to control your neighbours' lives by objecting to their perfectly reasonable extension plans on the spurious grounds that you would find the practicalities of the work being done annoying. That is a ridiculous objection. No one likes living near a building site - if that was a reasonable reason not to build, we would never build anything ever again! Or are you a special type of person who has additional rights over and above everyone else who lives near to one of the hundreds of thousands of homes that get improved every year?

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 18/05/2018 22:37

Come and live on my street, your neighbours will look like saints compared to mine, but we all get on really well and haven't got our heads stuck up our arses! You'd probably complain about us and our hot tub and bbqs too, my kids have a great time in their garden 😂

namechangedtoday15 · 18/05/2018 22:37

OP what is the distance between your house and theirs? I think you're talking rubbish when you say you're affected by dust and smells from bbqs Hmm

pinkgirl1234 · 19/05/2018 10:22

"We are veggies"

Sorry but that cracked me up. 😂

WTF has that got to do with it? I'm a vegetarian too I should add. Or do you mean you're vegetables?

This thread's making me a bit giggly and silly and I haven't even had Wine.

NoSquirrels · 19/05/2018 10:25

Grin I know you’re on a wind-up but the “we’re veggies and they have BBQs” is most amusing...

You can't possibly be serious. I hope not anyway. If I was your neighbour, I'd be laughing at your indignation.

Lucisky · 19/05/2018 10:48

This has got to be a wind up! However, in the faint chance it isn't, op, learn to live with it or move. Stop stressing about what your neighbours may or may not be doing, close your ears, get out in your garden and enjoy yourself. One day it will all be finished. Noise is life, if you live in close proximity to other people, you just have to accept it.
