Giving notice on private let

We are a 6 month contract in our flat currently. Did a full year, rent went up, landlady wanted to do another fix term rather than rolling month which we nearing the end of, actually ends end of next month.

We have been offered a new place that is a no brainier for us and although we love our current home we need to make this move.

This is our first Home and privately renting we are not sure the appropriate way to give notice. Should this just be done in writing or is it courteous to get in touch before just sending a letter?

it is courteous but not essential. if england and you are nearing the end of a fixed term, you dont have to give any notice as long as you are gone by the end. stay a minute past midnight and you need to give a months noti ce.

read your how to rent and your tenancy.

It should say In your tenancy how much notice you have to give, it's usually a months notice (and if you have now gone onto a automatic rolling contract then it's a month or four weeks if you pay rent weekly) write to your landlord and I would also send recorded delivery so you know they have received it ( recently we gave notice and they claimed not to receive it for nearly 19 days after I sent it but stupidly hadn't sent it recorded so ended up having to pay the extra!)

do nt send recorded, they can refuse to sign. send ordinary post with free proof of posting, deemed delivered.

Will dig out our contract. Pretty sure it says one month but wanted to give as much as possible. Haven't had any issues here and our landlady is really lovely so more out of courtesy was going to post on Monday, contract ends June 20th.

So post with proof of postage is the best way to go then.

yes. a phone call or email ear lier if you like but this kind of thing is always in writing.

We have always had an email - nobody wastes time with formal letters any more unless the contract stipulates.

Thank you all. Gave notice this week via letter and a text to the landlady (whole verbal relationship has been by text).

Went perfectly and flat is already up for rent and viewings booked for tomorrow.
