unlined curtains?

We need 2 sets of made to measure curtains, but the price difference between lined and unlined is often more than 200. Would we be crazy to get unlined curtains? Especially as we're spending so much on them anyway and they need to last years.

Yes you would. They won't look good or last if they're not lined.

Totally crazy. If you’re considering unlined, you’d be as well spending your money on lined ready made. Lined curtains hang so much better. I’d rather hang off a wee while and get the lined ones, if you’re anything like me you’d be annoyed every time you looked at them!

Thanks for talking some sense into me! It's hard to know where savings can be made and where they really can't

I think it’s worth paying more for lined.

If you are going to buy crap/ not what you want curtains, may I suggest that you don't pay alot for them!!? Try eBay, I've had a few nice lined Laura Ashley curtains for buttons on there, go for recent fabrics and you may get a few pairs that match or extra fabric to run up some cushions/ accessories. Worth a look, then save up for the lovely ones!

Have a look at places where you can get second hand ones too - not sure if the Curtain Exchange is still around but they were good.

Angryosaurus · 05/05/2018 12:57

Thanks. We already have cheap curtains. I checked and they are all lined which should tell me something! I think I’m just going to order one (lined ) pair for now.

It depends on the fabric whether sewn in linings improve the drape of the fabric. There's nothing wrong with having separate linings. Having no lining at all is not a good look.

MismatchedPJs · 05/05/2018 13:33

You can get separate linings. They attach to the lowest line of the curtain tape with curtain hooks.

Personally I'd go with cheaper lined curtains. An alternative to made to measure (though online places can be relatively reasonable these days for that) is to buy ready made and get the curtain shop to shorten them for you. Ours does this for about £30 a pair. Obviously no good if ready mades don't come in a suitable size.

pointless due to letting light in and heat out. buy some thick blackout linings. also put up rails, not poles.
