Does anyone know how I can find out how much a piece of land was sold for over 20 years ago?

Apply to the land registry for a copy of the transfer deed (they may not have it on file).

Have you looked on the gov.uk Land Registry website to see whether the title register has the information on the front page?

The trouble is that the land has been split up and built on since, so has different postcodes/title numbers now - cannot find what I need on their website
