Painting a decoupaged cupboard door

I've just been watching Angel decoupage some doors at the Chateau and it's got me wondering. There's a large built-in cupboard on the landing of our house which has each panel decoupaged and although it's quirky, it's not to our taste. Some panels have had additional small items decoupaged over the top so they are not completely smooth. How the hell to we get shot of the decoupage in order to re-paint? If we prime and paint, the outlines of the smaller items will show through.

My guess would be to use a steamer to lift the decoupage.

You'd need to let the wood dry out COMPLETELY afterwards though before doing any painting. (And depending what adhesive they used you might need to sand it back too)

Sand it off. It's probably been varnished.
Or decoupage over it yourself.
