Where to buy reclaimed York stone

Hi there,

We're looking to have some reclaimed York stone put down however we are struggling on where to buy it from.

Several of the builders we got quotes for recommended premium reclaimed York stone which they say is thicker, easier to cut and lay and more robust than modern York stone.

Does anyone have any hints on what to watch out for and where to buy from?

I'm in north west London.

I bought new York stone and some pieces were 50mm deep. If you try and get reclaimed it can be more expensive because it has to be cleaned off. The stone we bought did have a variety of depths but some pieces were very chunky. Go to a quarry and have a look! It just isn’t worth getting reclaimed and your builder isn’t correct anyway. There is a reason why it’s difficult to find! New weathers pretty quickly.

If it’s York stone, it’s York stone. Old or new! Maybe they have not used proper York stone from a quarry?

Any advice on what companies to buy it from?

Is it something relatively safe to order online without seeing it since every piece is different?

I can't advise you specifically, but I have a friend with a York stone patio, who had it re-done by builders last year. They lifted her old York stone and re-cut the slabs, and added new slabs where needed, and she was so so pleased with it. I have attached a pic.

I think the company are based in Bushey/Watford, so not too far from NW London. Let me know if you want their details.
