Bathroom pull switch

Hope this is in the best place.

The cord of my bathroom light pulled out the other day. I have a full replacement unit, as the old one is really old and filthy.

The old one was a two-way, and was poorly connected, the live wire seemed to be the only one actually connected Confused

I'm trying to install the new one-way unit now, and I'm a bit confused what to do with the neutral wire and what a "switched live" is.

Can anyone advise, please?

Wire it exactly as the old one was. The neutral isn't connected because it doesn't need to be switched. Best not to try to make any "improvements" to the way it's wired without the advice of a qualified sparky.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. According to the instructions I do need all three wires attached, though. The Earth wasn't even properly connected in the old one, so no way I'm copying that.

I went on YouTube, watched a few videos and have fixed it now. Don't know why I didn't think of that first!

Why would you earth a plastic switch?

I don't know. I didn't write the instructions. Added safety maybe. Irrelevant now anyway. It's done and working

the old one might have been a 2-pole isolator.

Ppst some pics of the old one, showing its terminals ans saying what letters and words are on it, and of the new one.

There are two common types of light switch, and two less common.

Does your bathroom have 2 light switches, or did it ever?

Your diagram is of a 2-way switch, which has three terminals. A one way switch only needs two terminals (it may have extras for safe parking of the neutral and earth)

How many wires have you got that used to be connected to the old switch? What colours are they?

too late now.
