How much bigger than the room should a carpet remnant be?

I need to do up a whole house on a small budget!

Thinking of buying carpet remnants and have seen some the right size. They are a great price for fantastic quality.

But, as per the title, how much bigger than the room should they be?

Either im being a bit dense or isnt the aim of a carpet to get one that is close enough to the room size as possible to save on wastage?

Bigger than the largest dimension you need - but not by a huge amount - but I'd err on the side of caution with measurements.
