Gravel driveway grid

We are getting a gravel driveway laid, fairly flat area. The builder has said the grid thing to go with it would be £2k and isn't that necessary. They would use weed membrane and rough stone under the 20mm gravel.

Not sure if this is a false economy?

Sounds brutally expensive on the face of it, but I don't know your drive measurements. The grid is very handy as it acts to keep the stones from straying.

Tell him you will supply the grids. Actually I notice they have a sale so I'll order now, thanks for saving me some money as I wouldn't have looked otherwise!

Wow that’s a lot! How many square metres have you got to cover?
We’re about to start a big renovation/new build and are going to end up with this as our drive at the end. I’ve just asked the groundsmen to level out an area and lay scalpings ready for the grid when the time comes. I’ve had my eye on a grid I’ve seen used in a car park at a local garden attraction and am going to find out (hopefully) which one it is next week. It’s the only one I’ve seen in action that seems to hold the stones within it really well and you can barely see the grid underneath. I’ll post a pic if I can remember.

It is to cover 150sqm, so even the one linked to below would come to 1.5k unfortunately.

I asked a landscaper friend and she reckons they aren't necessary IF ground is flat (it is) and if the edges are all contained e.g. Sett stones around the edges. So I think we are not going to bother with it - fingers crossed!

I wouldn't bother with it. We have had gravel driveways in our last two houses and neither have had a grid. Neither have been particularly flat either.

We have 20mm gravel and no grid. In 3 years we've probably lost half a bags worth of gravel. With the larger size stones, there is very little travel / pick up.

I’m going to go against the grain here and advise you to get it. Our drive was gravel when we moved in and despite being edged it moved. I always hated the pink colour too so we had it changed and the builder convinced us to use the hexagonal grid. The difference is amazing and it stays put so I’m not forever sweeping it back into place. The other thing I didn’t appreciate before but do now is how much it now stays put under my foot when I’m walking across it. So it’s not like walking across sand any more. The grid makes the gravel far more compact thus making it easier both to walk on and drive on. It did cost just under 2k but I’m so glad we did it.
