Manky hob (with photo!!!)

We’ve just moved house and never had a hob like this before!
I’ve googled and it’s not saying it’s ceramic, but it’s not saying it’s electric either, so not entirely sure what it is!
Anyway, it was lovely when we moved in but now it’s kind of grubby and looks a bit rusty/worn.
I clean it every time we’ve used it with antibac spray and kitchen roll.
Any idea how to get it back to looking how it used to look?!

Use a blade scraper to get rid of the crusted on bits.

I’ve got a blade scraper. What do I put on it first? Do I get in damp and then scrape?

Also I think I’ve scratched it but I don’t know how. There’s only been pans on there. Should I have bought special pans??

I scrape when it's dry and then mop it up afterwards. I use a Lakeland hob spray.

Is it from pans boiling over? Try some hob brite or something.

Antibacterial spray isn't going to do much I'm afraid.

Isnt it an induction hob? Absolutely do NOT use a blade on it, you’ll stratch it to bits!

Not from pans boiling over, rarely happens as I’ve got big pans!
More from food sloshing out when I’m stirring etc.

It looks like a ceramic hob to me.

I don’t think it’s induction! It came with no instructions and I know induction needs special pans so I checked via google.
I think it’s ceramic but the instructions online were crap. It’s a schott and Ceran 75G if anyone can shed any light on it!

I think just a more appropriate cleaner will probably do the trick. Antibacterial spray is about as useful as plain water on that sort of staining on a hob.

If you can't get any hob cleaner op even something like cif or a paste made with some laundry powder and warm water might help shift it.

Just found an old listing on eBay and it’s listed as a ceramic hob. So hopefully I can scrape away!!!

Right, I’ll try some cream cleaner and scrape as a last resort!!!

You need some patience and Hob Brite It is like magic for a glass topped hob.

You don’t really need “special” pans for induction by the way. Most pans are perfectly fine. If it heats up in seconds and makes a feint buzzing noise it may well be. If not, ceramic.

If its ceramic you can also use baking soda to clean the burn marks but you have to be very gentle with scrubbing. You mix the baking soda with water until its like a paste (usually 3 parts soda to 1 part water), spread it let it work then wipe it away.

Another option is sprinkling baking soda on it then you spray vinegar on it and let it bubble and then wipe.

Ah no, I hadn’t seen the official cleaning instructions!
I had tried a scourer but didn’t want to scratch it and it didn’t do a lot anyway!

Well that's me told then (sorry scurry - having a DP who has wrecked several trays etc by scraping them makes me nervous about these things!)

We had one of those in our old house and it did need scraping regularly. Be careful what pans you use. I bought a new frying pan from Dunelm once and it said suitable for ceramic hobs on it. But it wasn't and left lots of little scratches. You need nice smooth based pans.

Barman's Friend powder. It really works. Amazon or some Sainsburys stock it.

I’m wondering re new pans as my pans do seemed to have scratched where they’ve been on the hob. They’re kind of rippled on the bottom so I think I need smooth pans!

Did you see the tips for cookware on the care instructions?

yes as above, bar keepers friend. looks like ajax but not abrasive. use with slightly damp cloth. leave it on for a while then wash off. can use hob scraper but make sure its flat. bar keepers friend best cleaner for s/s and white sinks too
