Electricity bill for old owners

Sorry if I have posted in the wrong forum.

My husband and I have just bought house and we can only comoleted and therefore received the keys on March 29th (exchanged March 21st). My husband sent over the meter readings to the utilities company on March 29th)

A week-ish later we got a bill addressed to ‘the occupiers’ for £6 for 1st - 29th March. The previous owners moved out end of Feb so clearly told southern electric that, and therefore southern electric have no one specific to bill this to. Clearly they still owned the house then so they are legally responsible right?

Anyway they’ve not responded to our request of a forwarding address (they have had some other mail too), my question is, if I pay the £6 as it’s not a lot of money, surely nothing bad can happen to backfire in my face?

You need to call them and get it straightened out.

Yes the debt belongs to the old owners as they are responsible until the completion date. However, if you pay the bill for an easy life I can’t see how it will backfire on you but really you should be telling the energy company what has happened.

It's their bill, but as it's £6, personally I might pay it myself for an easy life.

OK, thank you both!
I’ll call them tomorrow. Just remembered about it so was in a bit of a worry!

Though why I was worrying over £6 I’ll never know. I’m know that I’m lucky that’s all I do!

Ive moved house a few times. I have had l9ads of bills addressed to the old owners. I've certainly never paid any of them. Even for £6. Don't worry about it.

Ive has this before

I phoned the electricity company and they asked for a copy of the email/letter of completion showing that date, and they just wiped off the £8.10 in my case

It’ll basically be the standing charge for the previous owners and the utility companies are fairly used to this happening
