Installing skylight/ roof lantern in existing flat roof?

Has anyone done this? We have converted our garage into a kitchen but it's too dark even with windows so was thinking of putting in a roof lantern or skylight.

Will I need planning permission?
How much is it likely to cost to buy and install?
Will the existing garage flat roof be strong enough or will I need a new roof too?

Thanks

We did this - our kitchen is east facing with a flat roof so was dark in the afternoon. No planning permission was needed in our case as it's not visible from the ground (we checked with the council) and it's made a massive difference. Ours is about 1.5m x 1m, just flat glass and I think cost us about £1200 including plastering, new downlights and so on.

Great thanks. How did you go about getting started. Did you just speak to a builder? Thanks

It was a joiner who did ours - he'd done work for us previously (replacing a sash and case window)

I’ve installed one in a development previously. I used a roofing contractor to install. I used a manufacturer called CCS based in the Midlands. They manufactured the exact size I needed and even pre-drilled holes for a chandelier I wanted to install once it was up. They were very efficient. Hope that helps!
