Tumble drier in understairs cupboard

Given the nasty habit these have of catching fire, we don’t use ours when we are sleeping or not home. It is only plugged in when in use. We are looking to clear some space from the entrance hall (where it lives now) and putting it in the cupboard under the stairs. It’s a largish cupboard, so there would be a bit off space around it so not jammed in. We’d only run it with the door to the cupboard open. Is this a bad idea or should we leave it in the (cramped) hall? Does anyone know if there are perhaps fire regulations around electrical appliances under stairs? Please let me know if this is a done thing or not! Thanks Smile

Used to have mine in an understairs cupboard (for at least six years) all was fine.

it doesn't know it's in an understairs cupboard, so if it was going to burst into flames it would happen wherever it was.

Mine has been in a built in wardrobe for years, obviously I have the door open when I run it but I've never had any problems with overheating.

It wouldn’t be an issue. I’m turning a larder in my kitchen into a utility cupboard. I can’t afford a utility room and saw the idea of a utility cupboard in a magazine.
I think most tumble dryers are fine if you empty the lint tray each time. I think some causes of the fires were because people never bothered to empty the tray.

Excellent! Thank you. I appreciate having others sense check my logic. I was just concerned there may be a reason that the risk of fire is increased and it will essentially set the only escape route from upstairs on fire. The things I worry about ! There really needs to be an “am I overthinking things” emoticon. And clippityclock, your utility cupboard sounds wonderful!

We have just moved ours into the cupboard under the stairs, just run it with the door open to prevent overheating. So far so good.
