Help me lay out this boot-room / laundry....

It will be 5m x 2m rectangular box.

If you imagine this as landscape shape (sorry cant add a diagram) there is a side /back door on far LHS corner of the 5m external wall and an internal door to kitchen in the opposite corner on the far RHS corner of the 5m internal wall.

We are a big busy family and this space has to work v hard. We are semi rural - so loads of muddy boots (we could build an open porch/canopy to store these outside?)......and although this isn't our main or only entrance it will be busy. Plumbing on all walls so can configure in anyway. Should I run laundry section along one 5m wall and coats and boots along the other 5m wall or split the rectangle into 2 zones?

Looks stunning Getsomesleep. So neat and tidy! I am hoping that getting ours sorted will help us to keep tidy.......

..... "morning laundry" ? - what is that?

Morning laundry 😂 a typo. My laundry. It’s always tidy! I love my laundry room - in the cupboard is an ironing station with fold down ironing board and hanging - I’ll go take a pic. The 4 machines is the best thing I’ve ever done! Life changing 😂 💤 sad I know.... I have a basket each on the surface that I fold each persons washing into - as well as any other belongings scattered around the house I find each morning and the kids have to collect their basket and take it away each day and return. Life changing😬

Is that 4 washing machines or 2 tumble dryers and 2 washing machines?

Getsomesleep · 15/04/2018 15:00

2 of each. I’ve got into a great routine of putting both washing machines on every morning. If there arnt clothes I strip a bed or raid the coat rack. Both machines every morning and I have no more washing mountain...it’s just...gone🤗. I’ve put hanging for drying in the boiler room as it’s so hot in there so I only need to use the dryers perhaps twice a week.... my fav room in the house👏🏻 - I know I’m sad...

You have a lovely dog Get

Getsomesleep · 15/04/2018 15:03

I found this pull out thing for drying clothes on amazon. It folds flat when I’m not using....

So it is morning laundry 😏. Wow, I think I'd want to wash everything in the house too, just cause I could. Impressive!

another20 · 15/04/2018 15:27

Love the ironing cupboard - genius. And the pull out thing for drying clothes - have a large sheila maid currently but it not enough....need some more drying space.

I did have that system of named baskets but I am v poor at implementing my ideas ......

I suppose it is 😂. Those are the clothes I washed and hung out this morning and when I pop the machines on tomorrow morning I’ll fold and basket those things.. yep all in the mornings😂. I’ve only had the room (house) for 6 months and it was planned out obsessively as I was sick of piles of washing all of the time. I had no idea just how fab the extra machines would be and I wish I’d done it years ago! Spend less time than I ever have before since I got organised - not usual for me 😬

Saltcrust · 15/04/2018 15:35

May I ask where you bought the fold out ironing board please Get somesleep ?

(Have serious laundry envy Grin)

FanSpamTastic · 15/04/2018 15:39

I have laundry envy too! I want a fold out ironing board! (And a room to put it in!!!!)Grin

Getsomesleep · 15/04/2018 16:08

It’s the top one that I have and the joiner built up a box at the side so I could stand the iron on and done need to move it ever - I just have to remember to unplug it when I’m done 😱

My basket system didn’t go too well at the start but then I started to use them for everything - you know when you sweep round the house -in the morning😬- and collect all the bits n bobs that has been abandoned - I bung it all in the correct basket. When the kids get new clothes/trainers delivered I use the baskets - pretty much everything...the kids would shout “mum - wheres my....” and eventually they understood the answer is always “the basket” . They either empty them themselves of I deliver/empty them if I go upstairs - I never go up empty handed! I’m aware I sound like a nutter but the house is big (and still not finished🙄) and I’m trying everything I can to stay ontop of it... I’m always on mumsnet looking for new tips...

Whattodowithaminute · 15/04/2018 21:49

Serious basket envy getsomesleep going to plan this system into our current renovation project!

another20 I think your space should be similar to our plans. At the moment I’m planning on a run along the long wall of a sink unit with drawers underneath, stacked washer and dryer, pantry cupboard with drawers and shelves for lightbulbs etc and other stuff then two rows of coat hooks-1 for adults one for kids, with a bench and shoe storage underneath occupying any remaining space that we have.... we will have a separate cupboard for hoover and brooms etc... now going to go away and work out where I can find space for 5 baskets like getsomealeep has...

Saltcrust · 15/04/2018 22:14

Thank you Getsomesleep

mum2015 · 15/04/2018 23:22

Getsomesleep,
I like your laundry/utility room, i like your basket idea a lotSmile
I am going to implement it too once i have a room for it as i would need couple of baskets for everyone!

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 16/04/2018 12:07

getme is that a soaking clothes sink too?

Absolutely loving your laundry room. Much jealousy.

Getsomesleep · 16/04/2018 13:49

Yes I do all the hand washing in one sink and the trainers and stuff in the other. I just want to get some shelves up that I’ll paint the wall colour like the ironing cupboard and then the family baskets can go up there then to keep the worksurface clear - by the way - my husband isnt aloud his own basket - he can’t be trusted - he has to share mine😂. In the cupboard under the sink I keep all the back up bathroom stuff, toothpaste etc and if something runs out in my bathroom or somebody mentions they are out of something, I pop whatever’s needed in their basket rather than make a special trip (also cleaning products) - same when I come in from the shops if that makes sense - thinking about it, I’m getting a bit lazy with the whole basket thing🤔😂

Op mentioned muddy boots - I’m thinking of getting cut down broom handles and securing them outside the back door - sticking up to pop wellies etc upside down onto but can’t decide if this is barking ?? or genius 🤔 ??

Getsomesleep · 16/04/2018 14:02

Since it’s out there that I’m odd with my basket habbit - I’ll share another bonkers tip - kids and hubby have to put sports holdalls/pump bags straight into the dirty laundry basket/shelf when they come home. I then unpack, wash clothes /towels/trainers and return back into the same bag and pop in/on their basket to go again - the family don’t have to do anything and I don’t have to listen to them moan about lost kit - win win😬 - I know it all sounds long winded and hard work but I’ve never spent so little time doing all these things since I got sorted!

mum2015 · 16/04/2018 14:11

Getsomesleep you are amazing. I really need to streamline whole tidying-laundry-tidying process and you are my inspiration now Smile

That is genius. What a good idea!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/04/2018 14:18

We've got a boot rack outside the back door with lengths of broom handle fixed in to a tiny area of decking tiles. Works well.

Getsomesleep · 16/04/2018 14:18

If I was amazing I would be able to train my husband to open.the.lid.and.put.INSIDE 😂😂. Im just lucky I’ve been able to design and build my own house whilst having a family...so I’ve tried to include anything that will make family life easier. Most women I think would plan kitchens and laundry rooms (and bedrooms and lounges etc 🤔😂duck) better. I’m sure our architect wouldn’t have given much thought to the kids screaming for swimming kit on a Monday morning😂
