Shower boards or tiles?

rainydogday · 09/04/2018 13:18

In the planning stages of re-doing our bathroom. We are having a walk in shower and lots of places say about using waterproof boards instead of tiles in the shower as easier to clean and no grout problems etc. What are your thoughts? Also can you use the boards behind loo and sink?

Do you mean the blue plasterboard? Those go behind tiles anyway, I wouldn’t think they’d be okay on their own.

Ohyesiam · 09/04/2018 13:31

I would do anything not to have to clean grout.

jingscrivvens · 09/04/2018 13:33

The bathroom panels remind me of hospitals IMO, I went for large tiles in the bathroom so less grout to clean.

Some of the coloured ones look really nice. I'd think about it I was redoing a bathroom. See how they look on displays at the DIY places.

Personally I think the acrylic printed ones can look a bit cheap and nasty but I've used these glass ones on a project and they looked really nice

We used them in showers (full height), behind the bath, sinks and loos (partial height)
Can't tell you the costs as it was a while back and we had 20 bathrooms to do so it was a bit of a bulk job.

The perspex ones you mean?

GrouchyKiwi · 09/04/2018 13:41

I had lovely shower panels installed when we redid the bathroom in our old flat. So, so much better than having to clean grout, and they looked smart. I hate the tiles in our new house; grout is impossible to keep properly clean.

elmo1980 · 09/04/2018 13:47

Yep we've got slate effect boards in our shower and behind the sink and bath. They look really smart and are very easy to keep clean. Would def recommend.

pepperpop · 09/04/2018 18:29

I had a look at the boards and couldn't find a single one that didn't look cheap and rubbish! Tiles all the way. I went for grey tiles with dark grey grout which saves on having to clean the grout Grin

Personally I’d go for the boards, they’re going to get more popular I think as lazy people like me cotton onto how much easier they are! They have a bit of a hotel look about them sometimes but if you get the right look in the room you’ll be fine. Next bathroom I do I’ll be using them.

Boards absolutely every time had them in 2 properties, huge range of finishes these days.

SwedishEdith · 09/04/2018 19:49

Those glass ones do look nice. Are they very expensive compared to tiles? It's the plastic that looks horrible - like a caravan.

derekthe1adyhamster · 09/04/2018 19:49

I have some of the mermaid panels, they are so easy to keep clean. I'd never go back to tiles

TerfsUp · 09/04/2018 19:59

I had panels put in when I had the bathrooms in my house renovated a couple of years ago. They are great - warm to the touch, waterproof and easy to keep clean.

EmmaC78 · 09/04/2018 20:23

I have panels and really like them, they work really well in an old house with uneven walls where the tiles were always leaking. I did ask the plumber about the glass panels and he said they were a total pain to fit so i just went with the standard type.

Tika77 · 09/04/2018 21:31

Oh, I never heard of these before. Not my kind of thing though.

BubblesBuddy · 09/04/2018 21:41

You wouldn’t see them in a high end property and they are a bit cheap looking. My friend redid her bathroom using them and it’s ok, but not classy. My large format Porcelanosa tiles are much nicer. They look expensive! Dark grout doesn’t get dirty either.

LateKate · 09/04/2018 21:48

I love the finish from tiles and have always tended to go with huge ceramic tiles but will definitely have wallboard panelling for my shower when we redo it. I am fed up with having to redo the grout! Have a look at Wetrooms International, their 10mm big panels are brilliant, very clean and hygienic and you can get hold of colour samples so you can see what the finish looks like with your lighting.

Just don't get them from Bathstore if you do go for it.....

rainydogday · 10/04/2018 13:54

Such a divide in opinion! I am doubting it a little as I do like the touch of tiles.... But the cleaning etc does appeal.
