Loft Conversion - Stairs currently in centre of house

Namechanged incase anyone recognised me from my floorplan Grin

We are in the very early stages of planning a loft conversion in our terraced house. I know we have the head height etc for one but my concern is where the new stairs would go.

Our current stairs are in the centre of our house when you’re upstairs. We have a flying freehold so downstairs the stairs are against the outside wall, but once upstairs, they are then not.

I’ve tried looking online but most images are of conversions with the stairs being on an outside wall.

Has anyone had similar and where were your new stairs positioned? I really don’t want to take space from a bedroom.

Thanks.

You have to have stairs into a loft that comply with building regs and where you have the headroom to get into the loft. So the stairs cannot rise into the sloping roof because there is insufficient headroom. They usually have to come into the loft at the maximum head height. Most people find they don’t have much choice because of the head height required. The stairs inevitably take a chunk of space below and it’s not always possible or a good idea if it compromises the accommodation on the floor below.

I would put them where the toilet is and put the toilet into the bathroom.

Why can't they go above your existing stairs? They rise up towards the centre of the house so you should have enough ceiling height.

What sort of roof do you have? Gabled or hipped? If gabled, which way does it run?

PinkRedBlue · 01/04/2018 18:59

It would be tight adding the toilet to the bathroom.

I was hoping the stairs would be able to go over the existing ones but I can’t see where they would start. We do have a storage cupboard to the side of the stairs, I wonder if we could have them coming out of there and then above our existing stairs?

A couple of neighbours have had a loft conversion done but all the houses have a slightly different layout so can’t use that as a guide.

We have a gable roof, we’re in a terrace so it goes front to back.

Yes I meant they could start where your upstairs landing cupboard is. Otherwise move the loo to where that cupboard is - integrate into bathroom - and have stairs where loo is now.

The cupboard isn’t to scale on the drawings and is only about 20cm deep so definitely not deep enough to incorporate into the bathroom and move the loo.

Hopefully they will be able to start where the cupboard is.

Thanks all.
