We have an three storey townhouse and are considering converting the loft to make it four storeys.... has anyone ever done this?

Just looking to chat to someone who might have embarked on this slightly more complicated project before!

Would you need to build another level on top? You might want to check that the council would let you and check that the foundations etc can take that sort of load.

We did something similar but ours is a two storey building. The main complication is that you need to get a party wall agreement from the properties either side.

I have a townhouse but I couldn’t cope with another flight of stairs.

Yes, the extra flight of stairs could eventually annoy me! I've already spoken to the council and they see no problem, aside from fire safety regulations which I'm already aware of. I have just never known of it happen before and wonder if we're mad 😄

We have a townhouse, and we thought about it, but we don't have the headspace in the loft, so it was a non-starter. It's such a shame, as I love the idea. The stairs wouldn't bother me - you don't move into a townhouse without being prepared for lots of stairs!
