We've recently moved into a 1950s ex-HA property. It is very solid with lovely big rooms and lots of storage. However I'm struggling with the interior as we were in 1850 cottage before that was full of period features.

All the Instagram reno accounts seem to be Victorian/Edwardian/Georgian homes.

Any recommendations?

What kind of decor are you looking for? There is 1980's house that I've seen on Instagram but it's all the same kind of stuff as the Victorian ones (dark walls, maximalist etc).

They tend to fall into three categories: the dark interiors, faux scandi and the brand new, Next-style showroom houses.

You could try mid-century, Scandi or showhomey styles. They should work well in a 50's property. I've attached pics of the styles to demonstrate.

Have you tried Pinterest or Houzz for inspiration?

Scandi Minimalism does work well that age of property, but depends if you like it...

@JoJoSM2 yes that's exactly the kind of style I like

Scandi interiors I think is the way! Thank you all. I've had such a mental block about what to do with the space

I have been given a beautiful solid, light oak dining table/chairs and matching side tables which will be a good starting point I think

1950s council houses are the best.

Period features aren't my thing, so we've just gone for what we like which is probably veering towards scandi (lots of Ikea!)

JoJo - I like that you have identified 3 styles - do you think you can mix and match these - or should you stick with one or the other?

JoJoSM2 · 24/03/2018 21:08

Another, mixing is cool and personally I love eclectic interiors. They're pretty tricky to pull off, though. Having said that, mid century and Scandi mix well and designers such as Hans Wagner or Arne Jacobsen were Scandinavian :)
