Tipping question

Hoping someone could help with a 'tipping' question. If you have builders working on your house do you tip them when they have completed the work?

We have builders in for 3 days. The owner of the company plus 2 labourers. I was going to give the labourers a tip each once the job was finished. Does anyone know if it's usual to tip builders?

I’ve never tipped builders.

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/03/2018 16:20

No, I wouldn’t tip. I’m sure you’ve paid enough!

SnowSki · 21/03/2018 16:22

Absolutely not. They cost the earth!

I think this came up on mumsnet a while ago and pretty much everybody said they didn’t tip builders. It’s really not expected.

My husband has bought coffee, donuts, pizza etc for contractors. At the end of the house build, he bought them each a family movie pass.

I work with builders a lot and nobody I've worked with really tips builders. If it's a long project and they've done a good job you often find the lads get some beer or some other token thank you.

expatinscotland · 21/03/2018 16:32

Never heard of tipping builders.

BloomersBerry · 21/03/2018 16:32

Thank you for all the responses. I hold off on the tipping. They'll be doing more work for us soon so I think it could get quite expensive to be tipping for every job Grin

The only time I have tipped builders is when they’ve done extra jobs got me while they were there.

Generally you want to make them responsible for tipping, skips are quite expensive nowadays.

I often tip builders and other workmen. I am a landlord in Central London so regularly use trades and am more than happy to reward people who are reliable and honest and who have done a good job. Overall I think it has saved me money as future quotes are less likely to be padded.
