Wooden white SHORT double bed - does it exist?

Mydaddysgirl · 08/03/2018 20:47

Trying to find something like the Ikea Malm in a length of about 185/190cm.

Any ideas please as to which online stores I can try? Have done Google searches on Shorty Doubles but no joy.

Could you build a base and put two guest bed single mattresses together to create a short double?

You read my mind Grin
Am thinking that may be the way to go....

How wide do you need it? Small doubles are 190cm long (but only 120cm wide).

All uk adult matresses up to king size are 190 long. If you are trying to fit into a gap you might be stuck with a devan base. Wood beds always stick out more to 'hold' the mattress.

European standard mattresses are slightly longer at 200. US sizes are different again.
://www.naturalbedcompany.co.uk/2017/02/17/us-and-european-bed-sizes/ has dimensions on across all three standards.

We have also shortened a flatpack bed a bit and wedged a full length mattress on top. You can get away with that if it's going into an alcove.

MacaroniPenguin · 08/03/2018 22:49

Meant to add that's only if a normal Uk divan doesn't fit.

See if you can find an Asian length bed - they’re a bit shorter. We have an Asian king size which is about 190cm long. (Bought in Singapore, so can’t offer supplier suggestion.)

You can shorten an Ikea bed (with saw, refill holes for fixing to other pieces)

Some mTresses can also be shortened by cutting off 1 or 2 or more rows of spring coils (mattress cover unzips to reveal them). I think we used a saw for this also.

See Ikea hacks on Pinterest also

We shortened daughter's bed by about 15 cm this way. Was a faff as a high sleeper and lots of pieces. Malm shouldn't be too hard

I've seen people build frames with all sorts including Kallax units so it would be very doable. There's a Facebook page called DIY on a budget which would be your friend here!

Mydaddysgirl · 10/03/2018 22:22

Thanks all.
I have limited mobility so would have to get a carpenter or handyman on board if I was to pursue some of these ideas, meaning more money than I can afford (due to reduced working hours) so I will have to wait a while unfortunately.

Thanks for all the ideas - I will look into the financially viable ones.

Always a risk you'll get DIY ideas on a DIY board to be fair OP!

I thought a normal double was 190, but normal uk king size are a bit longer, so you might be fine with a normal double divan. Adding a few cm extra for a wooden frame does complicate things!

Mydaddysgirl · 11/03/2018 06:57

I am aware of that Confused, I have said thankyou for suggestions, I don’t know where you got the impression that it was a risk for me.
I came back out of politeness to update as that’s the right thing to do.

I am not fine with a ‘normal double divan’ as you suggest...hence my OP!!

We got this one but it’s 193cm length so maybe a bit too long
