Anyone know East Dulwich?

I’m looking at areas to potentially move to in London (not immediately, but starting early). A few people have recommended East Dulwich to me so I thought I’d go down on a day off and have a look around. My question is this, where’s ‘the strip’? Is there a high street as such? Shall I just head to East Dulwich station and wander around there? Just wanted to get a feel for main part of it.
Thanks.

The Nunhead side of Peckham Rye is lovely too. You get more house for your money there, and it's still v close to E Dulwich. There are plenty of good schools in the area.

We moved to ED last year from Camberwell on a similar budget. Lucked into it and am I. A no through road but two minutes from Lordship Lane. We couldn't love it more (we have two pre-school children) state schools seem verbally fine although we will go the private route. Key for you would be getting in catchment for the Charter school, which is a shrinking catchment although there are plans to extend the school on the old ED hospital sight. Come and explore on a Saturday. Transport better than you think as lots of train options - I use the overground into Canary Wharf and DH has a slightly longer commute into the city

Thanks all. I feel a bit daunted as we were set to look at going to North London (which I know inside out), but I don’t want to miss out on a potentially more suitable area.

Check out the schools and catchments very carefully first. I'm not sure how many great ones there will actually be as there are many private schools in the area.
